DC Restaurant & News 2008 ( Summer Closer)

This has been a crazy summer, and its not even over yet in regards to the DC hospitality scene. From the recent frozen yogurt and designer cupcake craze, to the explosion of lounges/clubs opening in the city.

:::Restaurant Buzz:::

Hello Cupcake

Yesterday Hello Cupcake opened to much fanfare with cupcake fans standing in line for hours, the craze fueled by bloggers like myself along with help of Daily Candy and similar newsletters. You would have thought each cupcake had a extra stimulus check inside. First day jitters aside, Hello Cupcake handled the masses with class, amidst running out of cupcakes and having to bake more on the spot. To calm the masses, they began handing out free cupcakes to those waiting in the line that snaked all way to the ATM around the corner.

CoCo Sala is turning F st into chocolate lovers dream. As we noted before Co Co Sala has recently begun offering brunch options along with standard late night fare. After an glowing review from Washington Post's food critic Tom Sietsema. CoCo Sala is expanding next door into 927 F St NW in order to keep up with the increased demand for the restaurant. In the coming weeks they will be adding 57 additional seats in the space to the right of the existing establishment.

Surfside opened with well over 260 walking through the doors on opening night. Overall the public has been impressed with the Restaurant so far with relatively inexpensive beach fare created by Chef David Scribner, paired with amazing margaritas. The massive rooftop is a definite plus for the venue, as of the moment no drinks are allowed upstairs. We are sure Blair n Company

:::Lounge Buzz:::

Pasara Thai - Upstairs Lounge is showing promise, after opening up quietly to positive reviews. They have finally hooked up all the speaker wires and set to give some competition to neighboring lounges Play,1223 and Current. The lounge is called Sun Lounge, which was a source of confusion for some who thought it was going to be separate location from Pasara Thai, but actually is just the upstair area in the resturant. Friday's are set to be a international party with AllOutParty owner Sunny handling some of the promotions. Saturdays are going to handled by the ever classy Nate from Talk of DC.

After months of walking past the Hello Cupcake location that was under construction, while on the way to Fly Lounge. Its good to see that this amazing space is finally taking shape, with the district's new found love for designer cupcakes and frozen yogurt fads. Ben's Chili Bowl 50th Anniversary | 50 Years as a Washington, D.C. Landmark,

Congratualtions Ben's Chili Bowl on a amazing 50 Years!

"Washington Post Article"

50 Years of Friends and Chili
By Jane Black
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, August 20, 2008; F03

It's hard for Nizam Ali to pick his favorite celebrity sighting at his family's restaurant. There was the day he got a call that U2's Bono would be arriving in 10 minutes. And the day Russell Crowe arrived to film a scene for the upcoming movie "State of Play."

What Ali likes best about Ben's Chili Bowl is that he never knows just whom he'll meet. "Sometimes you look up and you see Charles Rangel in line. One time you're on the phone and Chris Rock walks in," says Ali, one of the founders' three sons. "Sometimes it's someone from Hawaii or London who's heard about the place and made the effort to come in."
This week, Ben's celebrates its 50th anniversary with a block party, gala and concert, each designed to elicit memories. Bill Cosby, who has been coming to Ben's for 49 of its 50 years, will emcee a gala at the Lincoln Theatre on Thursday night that will also include Washington luminaries Roberta Flack and Dick Gregory. On Friday, a block party will follow a news conference featuring Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, restaurant founders Ben and Virginia Ali and others. On Sunday, there will be a free concert at the 9:30 club featuring EU, Trouble Funk, Mambo Sauce and other bands. A book, "Ben's Chili Bowl: 50 Years of a Washington, D.C., Landmark," which celebrates the Ali family and the U Street neighborhood, hit the shelves Monday. Nizam Ali is a co-author.

The Alis opened "the bowl" on Aug. 22, 1958. In the early 1960s, when U Street was considered "Black Broadway," it played host to the likes of Duke Ellington, Martin Luther King Jr. and Cosby. The restaurant survived the 1968 riots and the severe downturn that followed. Though Ben and Virginia are retired, almost everyone else in the Ali family still pitches in. The counter, booths and stools are all original, and the chili is still made from the same recipe.
Ali and his brother Kamal are committed to keeping Ben's true to its roots. But they are making changes. In October, they will open a bar next door to Ben's, tentatively named Next Door. The new space won't try to duplicate the experience at Ben's but will complement it, Ali says: "You'll be able to get a beer, and maybe you'll be able to get a salad, because you can't get a salad or liquor at Ben's."

And you will be able to get one of the famous half-smokes or chili dogs at the new 50-foot-long bar."We owe our 50 years to every customer that's come in and every person who's gone out of their way to spread the word about Ben's," Ali says. "It's a humbling feeling. It's taken the city to keep us here."

Current Lounge DC | Former Dragonfly Lounge

CURRENT DC Grand Opening Coming Soon Current DC - Formerly Dragonfly Sushi Bar and Lounge www.current-dc.com

To understand the buzz behind this venue, you had to have frequented the former lounge that occupied this address before it was Current. Then you just might understand why, one venue has been so widely anticipated.

Construction shot - Notice the Wally* inspired stairs in the background. Most of the venue draws from the sleek designs of the Wally yachts. These yachts have been my favorite since seeing their designs in the movie The Island, then in person at the Monaco Yacht Show.

Dragonfly Sushi Bar, was known for its amazing sushi, with a fun and loving staff and management, in addition to being known for having some of the funkiest house and electro dj's in the county spinning up stairs in the lounge.

Personally, I am happy to finally seeing this venue catching the tide...(just had to). After some turnover in the direction and management of the venue. New investors and management have stepped in and corrected the financial and legal issues with the venue. With opening date being pushed back various times since early February, seeing this venue open its doors will definitely be a good sign.

As some may know, it was the general consensus that Current was going to be controlled by the same folks across Conn Ave at Fly Lounge. Well after a change in management at Fly Lounge due to some legal and currency issues, Current will now be a separate venue onto itself. The management team at Current now includes nightlife veteran Mood Bacho (Indebleu-Tantra) who will manage the venue.

::::::::: Lounge Details ::::::::::::

This Friday, nightlife promotional veterans JetSet Mafia are on board to host a soft opening for the venue. The promotional lineup hosts a "who -who" list of areas top promoters.
The weekly lineup is as follows Thursdays will be handled by Eric at Elund Events along with Das and Absolute Addiction. On Fridays starting next week, JetSet Mafia will handle Fridays at the venue and Saturdays are going to be handled by DC A-List (Walid Karim and Anoosh Jawanian).

With an intense blog chatter about the direction of the venue and when it will reopen since the day it first closed it doors, the wait is now over. It has been the subject for months on the Washington Post Nightlife blog and chat room, local bloggers all over the metro area have also contributed to the buzz.

Here are some of the details about venue, now mind you the word of the day is patience. It has been close to 8 months, that this venue has been dragging along. When we hosting weekly events at Play Lounge - we were granted a special tour of the venue and were sworn to secrecy on the some of the details inside the venue. We can't begin to count the number of people who used to walk up to Play and ask is this the new Current? Keep in the mind this was last November and December. Now we are privileged to reveal some of the juicy details about the venue.

The standard procedure for lounges and clubs opening up recently is table service (bottle service), and Current does not disappoint. With close to thirty tables available for bottle service even surpassing Josephine's table count of 25. For those who love bottle service this venue promises to offer a level of DC bottle service customers come to expect. The table minimums for eight people will be $500, which is in line with most upscale lounges in the area. The main table with amazing view of Conn. Ave, the area which used to house the DJ booth, will be going for $2,000 for twenty people.

The sushi chefs from Dragonfly agreed to stay on board, so plan to expect the same level of sushi from Current.

Thang Le the former sous chef at Komi and Momofuku (NYC) in will be joining the crew in the kitchen. So expect some surprises when you get a glance at Current's menu. Current will open its doors at 5pm weekly, were you can enjoy the amazing sushi and sake pairings.

We are not sure if the Funnel Cakes made the late night menu but we will keep you updated. If you need more information on this venue or have questions: please email us at litonevents@gmail.com.
