US Recession 2009 - Employers cut 533K jobs in Nov., most in 34 years

US Recession 2009 - Employers cut 533K jobs in Nov - The Highest in 34 years.

By JEANNINE AVERSA, AP Economic
WASHINGTON – Skittish employers slashed 533,000 jobs in November, the most in 34 years, catapulting the unemployment rate to 6.7 percent, dramatic proof the country is careening deeper into recession. The new figures, released by the Labor Department Friday, showed the crucial employment market deteriorating at an alarmingly rapid clip, and handed Americans some more grim news right before the holidays. As companies throttled back hiring, the unemployment rate bolted from 6.5 percent in October to 6.7 percent last month, a 15-year high."These numbers are shocking," said economist Joel Naroff, president of Naroff Economics Advisors. "Companies are sharply reacting to the economy's problems and slashing costs. They are not trying to ride it out."

The unemployment rate would have moved even higher if not for the exodus of 422,000 people from the work force. Economists thought many of those people probably abandoned their job searches out of sheer frustration. In November 2007, the jobless rate was at 4.7 percent.
The U.S. tipped into recession last December, a panel of experts declared earlier this week, confirming what many Americans already thought. Since the start of the recession, the economy has lost 1.9 million jobs, the number of unemployed people increased by 2.7 million and the jobless rate rose by 1.7 percentage points. President-elect Barack Obama said the dismal job news underscored the need for forceful action, even as he warned that the pain could not be quickly relieved.

"There are no quick or easy fixes to this crisis ... and it's likely to get worse before it gets better," Obama said. "At the same time, this ... provides us with an opportunity to transform our economy to improve the lives of ordinary people by rebuilding roads and modernizing schools for our children, investing in clean energy solutions to break our dependence on imported oil, and making an early down payment on the long-term reforms that will grow and strengthen our economy for all Americans for years to come."

To provide relief, the Bush administration will continue to concentrate on ways to bust through a credit jam that is feeding prominently into the economy's problems, Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez told The Associated Press in an interview. "We're going to stay focused on that like a laser," he said. On Wall Street, stocks slid. The Dow Jones industrials were down more than 180 points in morning trading.

Job losses last month were widespread, hitting factories, construction companies, financial firms, retailers, leisure and hospitality, and others industries. The few places where gains were logged included the government, education and health services. The loss of 533,000 payroll jobs was much deeper than the 320,000 job cuts economists were forecasting. The rise in the unemployment rate, however, wasn't as steep as the 6.8 percent rate they were expecting. Taken together, though, the employment picture clearly darkening.

The job reductions were the most since a whopping 602,000 positions were slashed in December 1974, when the country was in a severe recession. All told, 10.3 million people were left unemployed as of November, while the number of employed was 144.3 million. Job losses in September and October also turned out to be much worse. Employers cut 403,000 jobs in September, versus 284,000 previously estimated. Another 320,000 were chopped in October, compared with an initial estimate of 240,000. Employers are slashing costs to the bone as they try to cope with sagging appetites from customers in the U.S. and in other countries, which are struggling with their own economic troubles. The carnage — including the worst financial crisis since the 1930s — is hitting a wide range of companies.

In recent days, household names like General Motors Corp., AT&T Inc., DuPont, JPMorgan Chase & Co., as well as jet engine maker Pratt & Whitney, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp., and mining company Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. announced layoffs.
Fighting for their survival, the chiefs of Chrysler LLC, General Motors and Ford Motor Co. returned to Capitol Hill Friday to again ask lawmakers for as much as $34 billion in emergency aid. Workers with jobs saw modest wage gains. Average hourly earnings rose to $18.30 in November, a 0.4 percent increase from the previous month. Over the year, wages have grown 3.7 percent, but paychecks haven't stretched that far because of high prices for energy, food and other items.

Worn-out consumers battered by the job losses, shrinking nest eggs and tanking home values have retrenched, throwing the economy into a tailspin. As the unemployment rate continues to move higher, consumers will burrow further, dragging the economy down even more, a vicious cycle that Washington policymakers are trying to break.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is expected ratchet down a key interest rate — now near a historic low of 1 percent — by as much as a half-percentage point on Dec. 16 in a bid to breathe life into the moribund economy. Bernanke is exploring other economic revival options and wants the government to step up efforts to curb home foreclosures. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, whose department oversees the $700 billion financial bailout program, also is weighing new initiatives, even as his remaining days in office are numbered. Obama, who takes office on Jan. 20, has called for a massive economic recovery bill to generate 2.5 million jobs over his first two years in office. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has vowed to have a package ready on Inauguration Day for Obama's signature. The measure, which could total $500 billion, would bankroll big public works projects to create jobs, provide aid to states to help with Medicaid costs, and provide money toward renewable energy development.

At 12 months and counting, the recession is longer than the 10-month average length of recessions since World War II. The record for the longest recession in the postwar period is 16 months, which was reached in the 1973-75 and 1981-82 downturns. The current recession might end up matching that or setting a record in terms of duration, analysts say. The 1981-82 recession was the worst in terms of unemployment since the Great Depression. The jobless rate rose as high as 10.8 percent in late 1982, just as the recession ended, before inching down.

Given the current woes, the jobless rate could rise as high as 8.5 percent by the end of next year, some analysts predict. Projections, however, have to be taken with a grain of salt because of all the uncertainties plaguing the economy. Still, the unemployment rate often peaks after a recession has ended. That's because companies are reluctant to ramp up hiring until they feel certain the recovery has staying power.

LUX LOUNGE DC - GRAND OPENING | 11.29.08

LUX LOUNGE DC - GRAND OPENING 11.29.08 Former Avenue Nightclub DC

This weekend, LUX Lounge is schedule to open, for those who don't know this isn't just another brand new lounge, which seems like every month we have had about two or three new lounges opening.

The LUX Lounge transformation has not been a easy one. The shell that is now LUX used to be called Avenue Nightclub. For some the address of the renovated venue was the first clue of its prior incarnation.

Avenue Nightclub was closed down after a liqour violation, during that time another investor stepped into the mix and renovations began on the venue. That investor may become obivious after you design of the venue. Feel free to email us if you think you know the answer.
Upon entering you will notice a lot of changes from the former Avenue. Gone is the weathered carpet and the creaky stairs. According to the venue: "This event space has a true passion for guest service. Warm mahogany wood walls, candle-lit nooks, and plush décor fused together to create the perfect place for a sophisticated night of lounging and dancing. Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by elegant interiors with dynamic soft lighting effects, multiple plasma displays, fine marble bars, dramatic eighteen-foot ceilings, and polished touches that meet their highest expectations."
The Grand Opening will feature R&B artist Jasmine Sullivan.

The next Saturday recording artist and superstar NE-YO will hosting the Saturday night party.

Already on board are some of the former promoters from the avenue days of the venue. The IDC Group has signed on along with Ron De Berry. No word yet on whether they will bring the latin night back to the venue.

Stay tuned...

Playboy Swimwear Fashion Show at K Street Lounge??

Playboy Swimwear 2009 Fashion Show at K Street Lounge DC ??
Has K Street Lounge come to this, things might be slowing down over at K Street Lounge. We saw this promotion a few weeks ago, and were quite shocked to say to the least. With the its neighbors at Lima and Josephine doing brisk business K Street Lounge is trying a lot of things to get crowds back through its doors. After 3 years in business, this might be some of the signs of slowdown.

Recently a sizeable chunk of their management and front door staff transitioned to Indebleu in the Chinatown area. With the back VIP area on several night never evening opening, new promoters have stepped in to help the venue.

We remember the days when a fashion show at K Street lounge was almost next to impossible, but a few months ago Sir Ebong Eka squashed that and produced a amazing fashion event for charity and his amazing menswear clothing line. Moving away from the charity fashion show to this Playboy Swimwear Show marks a huge change in the way K Street projected its image.

The Bowtie Crusader! - Ex Mayor Tony Williams Turns Vigilante

The Bowtie Crusader! - Ex Mayor Tony Williams Turns Vigilante Crime Fighter

We have a new crime fighter in town, no its not Batman or Superman its....BOWTIE MAN...

No really its former DC mayor Anthony Williams, who stopped a robbery in progress with his bare hands and bowtie of course. Way to go.
Story from Reliable Source below:

Who Was That Bow-Tied Superhero?

"Former D.C. mayor Anthony Williams (Susan Biddle/The Washington Post)D.C. has a new crime fighter: Mr. Bow Tie!

Tony Williams was on K Street yesterday afternoon when a thief grabbed a package from a UPS hand truck. The deliveryman, standing a few yards away, looked up and yelled, "Hey!" but the man kept walking.

Enter the former mayor, who asked the delivery guy if he was being robbed. "I said to myself, 'Do I just stand here? No, this can't happen,' " Williams told us. "And I just started running."
The ex-mayor, 57, was "extremely decisive," said eyewitness Lisa Gough, director of communications for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund. Gough was walking back to the office when she witnessed the theft and saw Williams spring into action. "While the rest of us were standing around trying to figure out what was going on, he acted. He was definitely in hot pursuit."

Williams sprinted down K Street shouting, "Stop! Stop! You can't do that!" With the deliveryman right behind him, he caught up to the culprit -- who looked at the bow tie and stopped dead in his tracks."You used to be the mayor," said the surprised thief, who simply handed over the box of computer parts.

The man walked away; Williams said he started after him while looking for a police car but decided not to restrain him. The man slipped into the crowd as passersby asked Williams what had happened. "I'm just fighting crime in the city," he told them."
- This story is truly amazing, I just wished he worked Saturday's on K street...hmmm...

Diplo live @ Commonwealth DC

Super Producer and DJ Diplo Live @ Commonwealth DC

Fresh beats and amazing productions credits DIPLO is international sensation, after his public relationship with MIA. Weds Night from 6 to 8 p.m. internationally acclaimed DJ Diplo brings his unique and progressive style to Commonwealth DC

Diplo will also be bringing his roster of MAD DECENT talent including Blackstar, Boy 8-Bit, and Telepath.

Drinks and Hor D'Ouevres provided as always. Later DIPLO will be performing at the Black Cat.

Check out his Interview with Washington Express NightOut:

"FOR BALTIMORE'S CLUB scene, there was the late DJ K-Swift. For the celebrity crowd, there's Lindsay Lohan's very special friend, Samantha Ronson. And for any hipster, there's Diplo — aka Wesley Pentz, former beau of rapper M.I.A., owner of the Mad Decent label and co-runner of music collective Hollertronix. Been bumping to "Paper Planes" since "Pineapple Express"? Thank Diplo for that beat.

In fact, you could thank him in person, as Diplo performs at the Black Cat in Washington on Nov. 12 and Sonar in Baltimore on Nov. 13. The DJ will take the stage with Abe Vigoda, Boy 8-Bit and Telepathe (and No Age in Washington and DJ Blaqstarr in Baltimore). He had a quick chat with Express before the sound check at his San Francisco show last week.

EXPRESS: How is the Mad Decent tour going? » DIPLO: The tour's been crazy so far. ... We had a little rough patch in the middle where we went to jail, but I can't talk about that, the jail thing. But it's been crazy.

EXPRESS: What should fans expect from your shows at the Black Cat in Washington and Sonar in Baltimore?» DIPLO: Well, playing Baltimore will be a little more club, because DJ Blaqstarr will be there, and the Washington show will be crazy, because of No Age. That show will probably be the best lineup to come to D.C., ever, in the history of music. I think you can expect to hear loads of Mad Decent stuff; there will be dancing onstage; No Age and Telepathe will be just be playing crazy stuff. If you listen to us and know what kind of stuff we do, you'll enjoy it.

EXPRESS: So far this year, you've remixed songs from artists as varied as Kanye West ("Flashing Lights"), Spoon ("Don't You Evah") and Radiohead ("Reckoner"). Where do you draw your inspiration from?» DIPLO: As far as remixes, I get my inspiration from like, the budget we have. ... But sometimes I'll remix stuff on my own, like, the Kanye West remix I did for my own; the Radiohead one, that was my favorite song on ["In Rainbows"]. Then, other remixes I've done, I do for friends — I do for Boys Noize and Bart B More. That's more club stuff, and I can do stuff for that real quick.

EXPRESS: What's next for you? » DIPLO: I have a couple more shows after this, Christmas Eve-era shows, and then I'm going to Trans Musicales de Rennes in France — it's a big party, it's like South by Southwest over there. And then I'm doing a big warehouse party, and then I'm going to Jamaica to do some promo work for the record [recorded with fellow DJ and producer Switch]. I'll be there doing a video in December.

Barack Obama Elected 44th President - DC Parties in the Streets

Barak Obama Makes History - Takes Swing States and Defeats John McCain and Sarah Palin
News of the Day

Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois was elected last night as the nation's 44Th president, riding a reformist message of change and an inspirational exhortation of hope to become the first African American to ascend to the White House.
With dozens of Election Day parties in city from U Street as pictured all the way to Dupont Circle. DC citizens were out celebrating the win in ecstatic fashion.

It was truly a amazing site to see with people for all four corners of the city celebrating in the street and unlike times before in the city. There was no fights, just high fives and hugs. I have never seen, such a positive and happy mass of people, and unlike college everyone for the most part was behaving themselves. It felt like a huge city wide block party, with parties at Darlington House and Conn Ave letting out to become on happiest occasions we have seen in years. Let's hope the city and county continues with unity and good vibes as the year progresses.
This morning reports from all over the city have been coming in. We are being told that "The Washington Post" for Today has become more sought after then Redskins tickets. All we can say is this truly something to remember no matter what side you voted for.

The ‘Oasis of the Seas’ - | The Largest Cruise Ship in World

The ‘Oasis of the Seas’ - The Largest Cruise Ship in World

For those who don't know, I am nautical enthustiast, so when this news broke I just had to report it. Royal Caribbean, my favorite cruise line for when I want to get away and just relax on the high seas. It is now reported that the ‘Oasis of the Seas’ will hit the waters in late 2009, this ship will be the largest and most revolutionary cruise ship in the world.

Made for Royal Caribbean International, the oasis of the Seas cruise ship is an epitome of luxury, featuring 16 decks, 2700 staterooms, and the capacity to accommodate 5,400 guests at double occupancy.

Everything on this cruise liner will speak luxury and comfort. The ship will feature well over 15 restaurants and bars, a casino, a theater, two night clubs and the very first beach pool at sea.

Special thanks to Royal Caribbean International for the heads up.
